Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner

Choosing the right firewood helps maintain a clean flue.

Seasoned Wood Importance

Using seasoned wood is crucial for a cleaner flue. Seasoned wood has been dried for at least six months, reducing its moisture content to below 20%. Lower moisture means less smoke and soot, keeping your flue cleaner.

To determine if wood is properly seasoned, check its color and weight. Seasoned wood appears grayish and is lighter than freshly cut wood. Splitting a piece can also reveal visible cracks and a dry appearance inside.

Hardwoods vs. Softwoods

Hardwoods, like oak and maple, burn hotter and longer than softwoods, such as pine. This higher heat output results in more complete combustion, producing less creosote and buildup in your flue.

While softwoods can be used to start a fire quickly due to their ability to ignite easily, they should not be the primary source for heating. Relying on hardwoods ensures a cleaner and more efficient fireplace.

Avoiding Contaminated Wood

Never burn painted or treated wood, as these can release harmful chemicals and produce excessive creosote. This can lead to dangerous flue buildup, increasing the risk of a chimney fire.

Additionally, avoid burning construction scraps or driftwood. Both contain elements that can lead to corrosion and damage in your chimney system, affecting its safety and efficiency.
